Thokozani Freedom Mbatha from South Beach in Durban is the designer for the clothing brand, Black Pepper, also known as, Poivre Noir. “A need to express myself,” is the reason he says he went into the industry in the first place.
This passionate designer takes much of his inspiration for his designs from the African countryside particularly, such as the Isimangaliso Wetland, Kruger National Park, Klein Karoo and similar. “I describe my style as sophisticated creations for lively and thoughtful young African professionals,” he adds.
Some of Mbatha’s achievements thus far, include; being the First Black Fashion Designer to showcase at the Durban Art Gallery under the management of Wayne Durno, Black Pepper Showcased at the Tribute Magazine Annual Fashion at the Caesers Palace in Johannesburg exhibited via YFM at the South Africa Fashion Week and showcased SAFW in Collaboration with Hecter Peterson. And more recently, Mbatha was the only South African Nominated among the top ten Africa Finalist for the Festival International DE La Mode (FIMA) where Black Pepper won the First Price (Prix Ibrahim Loutou), Black Pepper showcased for the very first time in Labo ethnik (Paris,Chatelet) as well as on the roof of the Eiffel Tower during Imaginez Maintenant with highly recognised fashion houses. Black Pepper is now in partnership with the shops of TANAHRHEA in Switzerland, paving a way for overseas market. This was made possible by SAOBC and CultureFrance.
