Terrence Bray, born in Durban, South Africa in 1974, graduated from Durban University of Technology Fashion Department in 1995. His label, Terrence Bray, has been featured in a number of international magazines, including Wallpaper, Collezzioni Street and Sport and Gala. British Vogue named him ‘South African label to buy’ and more recently, his creations have appeared on the covers of Paris Match and Pointe de Vue.
South African GQ voted him ‘most outstanding Men’s designer’ firmly cementing his position in the South African fashion industry. Most recently his garments have been in Hello and Bunte magazines.
Bray has shown his collections at Sanlam South African Fashion Week since its inception in 1999, receiving sponsorship from FHM magazine, Business Day newspaper, Chivas Regal and Renault SA. For his dedicated work with rural crafters he was sponsored by the Department of Arts and Culture.
Bray has participated in a number of fashion events in South Africa, winning the Durban Designer Collection, both as a Young Designer and as an Established Designer. He is associated annually with the Vodacom Durban July, the most prestigious horse racing event in Africa. He has been both a winner and a judge for many of the fashion titles. In 2006, Bray won the Men’s Health Style Challenge. For work on costume design in theatre, Terrence has received numerous awards.
Terrence dressed HSH Princess Charlene in a hand beaded dress with Ndebele influence, for the South African celebration in Durban. He also dressed Lynette Wittstock and Donatella Knecht De Massey. The success of Terrence Bray is based on a firm and distinctive design philosophy; to strive for the best quality possible at that moment – quality in all aspects of design.
