Mbali Zulu’s ladies wear brand, ZuluM, perfectly encapsulates modern tribal contemporary clothing.
She graduated from the Durban University of Technology in 2005.
Her designs are inspired by her culture, the environment in which she grew up and fashion trends. The emerging trend that has influenced her DFF collection is a tribal twist which exemplifies her brand.
The favourite item that she has designed so far is a fully beaded jacket for the Durban July – and this is closely related to her biggest life achievement so far which was coming second in the Fashion Challenge at the Durban July.
Zulu’s favourite local designer is David Tlale as he has built a brand that is well known thought South Africa and the world.
Asked to name one local and one international celebrity that she would like to dress, she chose South African celebrity Nomzamo Mbatho (because she is so natural and comfortable in her own skin) and international music star, Beyoncé as a single photo of her wearing a designer’s clothing can turn a brand in to a household name.
The greatest challenge that she believes she faces going forward is building a well-known brand. Having mastered this, she intends building ZuluM into a popular label in the not too distant future.
